Top Smartphones with Physical QWERTY keyboards

I’m one of a shrinking faction who still swears by the physical QWERTY keyboard. Apple and Android can keep their all-touch interfaces! My fingers are way too big, and my reputation can’t afford a bunch of mis-dialed numbers, or text messages which have to be decrypted. Call me “old school” but I’d be even happier if I could find a smart phone with a HUGE rotary dial in the middle of it!

How COOL are these? Smart phones with rotary dials!

If you’re like me and can’t seem to wrap your head around the concept of an all-touch smart phone, or if the name “Christopher Latham Sholes” resonates more with you than Steve Jobs, then this blog post is for you! As you review the following list of smart phones with physical QWERTY keyboards, be sure to keep your eyes peeled! If fate has its way, the physical keyboard will go the way of the dinosaur, in favor of mobility and current market trends.

BlackBerry Q10
With its own operating system and data package, BlackBerry has endured its fair share of criticism. But you have to credit them for being the flagship for physical keyboards! I recently took the Blackberry plunge with its new Q10 model and won’t be resurfacing anytime soon. The new Q10 doesn’t disappoint! Its number one on this list because it’s practically the only new smart phone out there with a physical keyboard AND touch screen, giving consumers the best of both worlds!

BlackBerry Bold and Curve
The good news is that with the release of the new Q10, it seems as though BlackBerry will continue manufacturing smart phones with physical keyboards (I was a bit concerned after the success of their all-touch Z10 model). The bad news is that BlackBerry may be the ONLY company doing so, which obviously means a fewer selection to choose from. If nothing else, we can probably expect enhancements to the Bold and Curve, which had favorable runs in the marketplace.

Samsung Galaxy S Relay 4G
Samsung’s Galaxy series has become one of today’s most popular smart phone brands, so it’s only right to include the S Relay 4G model in our list of best smart phones with physical keyboards. It was rated more favorably than the Stratosphere II, which also donned a physical keyboard. But with the sensation of their S4 and S5 all-touch smart phones, Samsung seems to have ditched physical keyboard altogether.

Motorola Droid 4
Originally billed as the “anti-iPhone,” the Droid 4 smart phone was a surprisingly good effort from Motorola (bracing myself and awaiting the backlash). Hey, let’s be honest for a moment: It really WAS a cool gadget! A four-out-of-five star rating on CNET is nothing to be modest about. Packaged with a dual-core processor and slide out keyboard, it certainly gave “BlackBerry addicts” a reason to give the Android operating system a try.

T-Mobile Sidekick 4G
T-Mobile’s Sidekick 4G is actually an even older smart phone, having been released in 2011. It had lots of great reviews, but can be somewhat embarrassing for anyone over the age of 25. Can you imagine sitting in a team meeting and everyone diverting their attention to your vibrating T-Mobile Sidekick? NOT THE MOVE! Give that Sidekick to your teenaged child, and choose from one of the smart phones above…

Google G2
…And since we are on the subject of older gadgets, I figured I’d throw in Google’s G2 . I had this smart phone for nearly three years and only upgraded (to the BlackBerry Q10) when it finally refused to power on. You’d seriously be hard pressed to find a bad review of this phone! And although it’s no longer offered by any of the major carriers, you can still find new and refurbished ones on eBay! If you decide to give this one a try, make sure to spend a few extra bucks for a SIM card adapter.

So what are your thoughts? Do you think there is still a market for smart phones with physical keyboards? While you’re thinking about that, you may want to consider getting a little extra protection for your current phone. Protect Your Bubble can help safeguard your smartphone against theft, damage, hardware failures, and every other problem that will exist until the world’s first damage-and-theft-proof smartphone arrives.
