The power of celebrity when it comes to product promotion is certainly potent and whatever these celebrities personal preference may really be, it does come down to if they have a sponsorship or not.

Still, we will no doubt see more Samsung and iPhones being used by celebrities as long as they take photos of themselves or the paparazzi is present.

Less Worry for Crazy Family Vacations – Free Travel Insurance for Kids!

Griswold's heading to Wallyworld

My grandmother was once asked if she wanted to go on a family vacation and 8 hour car trip with me and my 3 younger sisters.  Her response was, “I don’t want to drive to the end of the driveway with you crazy people!”  Family vacations can be crazy, but they are always worth the effort though… except when you are traveling to Wallyworld while they are closed for renovation.

There are always a lot more logistics to factor in when kids are involved on road trips, plane rides, hotels, and any other moving part of your travels.  Here are a few tips for traveling with your family:

Call for Hotel Hospitality – Let them know that you are traveling with your kids and see what they have to offer to make your stay easier.  Some hotels have cribs they can offer that will allow you to leave the pack-and-play behind.  They may even have certain rooms that have a little more space if they know that there are going to be several people sleeping in the room.  It never hurts to ask, and their goal is to make your stay great.

Packing Light – Airlines and car trunks don’t like a lot of bags.  If you have one big suitcase, use it for multiple family members, but keep it under 50 lbs to avoid additional fees.  If you are checking bags for a flight, let each person carry a backpack with one change of clothes and things to do on the trip.  Take an inexpensive and light umbrella stroller instead of the behemoth if you can.  Lastly, you never need as many clothes as you think, especially for little kids clothes.  If the place you are staying has a washer/dryer, plan to use it, and your packing will be much easier.

Save the Screen – My wife and I used to put the kids in the car and immediately turn on the DVD player.  The problem is that the kids lose interest after a little bit and the “Are we there yet’s” and “I’m hungry’s” crank up.  If your secret weapon is a game on an iPad or a DVD player in the car, see if you can start the trip with books and small toys to keep them happy and save the entertainment for the area of the trip you usually experience the primetime meltdowns.

Bottles Up & Down – If you are flying with a baby or a small child, give them something drink on the way up to 30,000 feet and on the way down to keep the pressure in their ears down as well.  For older kids, chewing gums does well too.  Also change that diaper quick – while you and your spouse like to play “Who’s gonna change it” with each other, your fellow passengers are not as used to that lovely aroma.

Yakkity Yakk –In the middle of the trip and somebody is getting sick?  If you are in the US, use your smartphone to find a good doctor nearby.  Apps like ZocDoc and BetterDoctor are great for seeing local doctors, their specialties, and their customer ratings.  If you have travel insurance and you are out of the country, call them first to see what guidance they can provide for your medical needs.

We understand that the trip with your family is a lot to plan and execute in order to create a lifetime of memories.  This week, Protect Your Bubble released a new Travel Insurance program that allows you to add up to 3 kids for free to your policy for every insured adult or parent on the policy.  That’s right…free!

So while you are planning how to get the whole family through security at the airport, you don’t have to worry as much about unforeseen doctor visits or trip mishaps for your kiddos during the trip.  Buy the travel insurance policy for you, and cover the kiddos too for free!

The New HTC One M8 – Everything You Need to Know

htc one m8After months of leaks and rumors, HTC has finally launched the successor to its 2013 HTC One flagship smartphone, the HTC One M8. Featuring a new larger display, an evolved metal design and powerful upgraded specifications, HTC has high hopes that it will replicate the success of its predecessor.

Availability and Price

The HTC One is being launched in over 100 countries to over 230 carriers. Right now it is available for order in North America from AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, Rogers, Bell, and Tellus for immediate shipping. T-Mobile announced it will be selling the phone online and in stores on April 11. The price for the phone is $199 with a 2 year contract or $649 with no contract.

Hardware

The HTC One M8 is powered by a quad-core 2.3GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, houses a 5-inch Super LCD HD 1080p display, a Gorilla glass cover, 2GB of DDR2 RAM, 16GB or 32GB of internal storage, and up to 128GB expandable microSD card storage. It is compatible with every imaginable 2G, 3G and 4G network, Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac, and Bluetooth 4.0 with aptX. The battery has 2600 mAh capacity, and will be good for up to 20 hours of 3G talk time, or up to 496 hours of standby on a 3G network connection.

htc one m8 cameraCamera

The HTC One M8′s standout feature is its camera setup. The HTC One M8 features an upgraded version of the 4.1MP “Ultrapixel” camera seen on the original One. The upgraded camera features a new beefed up imaging co-processor and two lenses in the rear known as the “Duo Camera” system. The Duo Camera technology uses a second supporting lens to let the rear camera capture spatial information, allowing for advanced special effects. This lets users to create 3D-like images and retroactively adjust the point of focus on a captured image. The primary rear camera has HTC’s UltraPixel module with 2.0 um pixels and a 1/3-inch sensor, shooting at f/2.0 with a 28mm lens. The rear camera also has dual LED flash and full 1080p HD video recording. The front camera has been upgraded as well, from 2.1 megapixels to 5 megapixels. This allows for ultra clear selfies.

Software

The HTC One M8 runs on a customized version of Android 4.4.2 KitKat.

The home screen has an upgraded version of HTC’s Blinkfeed new aggregation service. The new Blinkfeed offers the same push update tiled interface as the original version, but supports a number of new news outlets and adds the ability to get “batch updates”. Batch updates let you set Blinkfeed to only push updates about specific topics or hashtags.

A new “Sensor Hub” tracks the user’s movements to count steps, and it also enables a variety of motion, tap and swipe gestures that can be performed while the phone’s display is off. For example, double-tapping on the screen will wake the HTC One from sleep, or swiping to the right on the sleeping display will unlock the phone directly to the BlinkFeed screen.

The HTC One M8 offers gesture control. The M8 has what HTC is calling Motion Launch, which is a series of gesture controlled shortcuts to let you activate the screen, answer calls, and turn the lock screen on and off without swiping or tapping. It does this using low-power monitoring of orientation, speed, etc., with its onboard sensors to predict what you’ll want to do when you unlock the device.

HTC-One-M8-ColorsThe new HTC One seems like a solid improvement on the original and is available in three colors: The familiar “glacial silver,” a very nice new “amber gold” color, and our favorite, “gunmetal gray,” which features a brushed finish. With the impending release of the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the Sony Xperia Z2, HTC has taken the lead for the 2014 smartphone race.

Can Paying My Taxes Affect My Credit Score?

credit score taxes

Tax time is a stressful time. Do you worry that tax issues will spill over to your credit reports and affect your credit score? The good news is that owing the IRS doesn’t affect your credit score, but how you choose to pay your taxes does.

The following are 4 ways that you can pay your tax bill and the implications to your credit score:

Personal Loan

If you apply for a loan to settle a large tax bill, the personal loan amount and your monthly payment record will be reflected in your credit reports. Note that the fact that you applied for a loan will count as an inquiry into your credit score and this will lower your credit score as well, but the drop is merely temporary. If you are considering applying for a personal loan, you should begin by assessing your credit strengths and weaknesses. You can minimize loan applications by first determining a lender’s minimum credit score requirements. Choose a lender with credit requirements that will match your credit score.

Credit CardCredit-cards

Having a large credit line is an advantage for most people. Charging a tax bill can be an option for credit card holders. If you’re already consuming a large amount of your available credit, there will be consequences to your credit score. Charging a credit that is nearing its limit can impact your credit utilization ratio. This measures about 30% of your overall credit score.

Installments

Paying a tax bill by IRS installment agreements will not affect your credit score in any way. This is because installment agreements are not reported to credit reporting agencies.

Tax Lien

If you owe a large amount of taxes or if you fail to resolve your debt quickly, the IRS will issue you a tax lien which will reflect on your credit reports.  Tax liens fall into the negative category, alongside collection accounts or bankruptcy. Unless you take the necessary steps to get this withdrawn, these can stay on your credit report for 7 years after the tax liability is resolved. If successful, your credit scores could rise significantly, provided that the rest of the information on your reports is positive. Fortunately, the IRS has made some changes to its tax lien policies, making it easier for taxpayers to get liens withdrawals after paying their tax bills.

When deliberating on how to pay your taxes, best give your credit score a look. Armed with this information, it will be easier to determine which payment method is best suited for your current financial situation. Whatever the case, it is always a good idea to continually monitor your credit.

Best March Madness Basketball Apps

It’s March Madness time!  NCAA’s annual college basketball tournament is upon us once again.  It’s one of the most exciting sporting events of the year, filled with enough drama to make Days of our Lives look tame.  Unexpected buzzer beaters, rising superstars, and bracket busters occur throughout the course of the event, which lasts from March 18 to April 7.  We’ve created a list of the top March Madness apps for our rejoicing basketball brethren as this year’s tournament will surely contain copious amounts of unadulterated excitement.

ncaa march madness live appNCAA® March Madness® Live

The NCAA March Madness Live app is the official app of the tournament. This app allows you to stream the basketball games live through your phone or tablet.  Access is only available to paid TV subscribers as the games are being broadcasted through CBS, TNT, TBS, and TruTV.  A temporary 3 hour preview ticket grants access to users before login is required.  The official app is perfect for on the go viewers or people on the job.  You’re always just a bathroom break away from watching live basketball action.  If you are unable to watch the games, at least you will keep updated with the live score and stats tracker.

thuuzThuuz

With many games overlapping each other, it is difficult to catch all the action.  The Thuuz app makes it easier to follow the hectic 68 man team tournament.  Thuuz rates live and upcoming games on a scale of 1-100, 100 being the most exciting game possible.  80 would be considered a great game.  A game rated 10 would be a blowout of monumental proportions.  Even more, Thuuz sends alerts of live games in progress once an excitement threshold has been crossed, indicating many scenarios like a large impending  comeback or a down to the wire close game.  This ensures you won’t miss out on any thrillers or billie jeans.

Tournament Bracket Tracker

Keeping track of your bracket is a must especially when you have multiple variations for different office pools. The Yahoo Sports Tourney Pickem and ESPN Tournament Challenge seem to be the most popular bracket apps.  Both apps are free to use and play.  Yahoo is sponsoring celebrity pools with NBA superstars Paul George, Chris Paul, and Carmelo Anthony.  It definitely would be worthwhile to beat Carmelo Anthony and his Syracuse alma mater with a bracket dubbed “Honey Nut Cheerios.”  Yahoo also offers a $1 billion bracket challenge sponsored by Quicken Loans.  The ESPN bracket app allows for a chance to win $10,000 and tickets to the Final Four in Dallas, TX.

ESPN SportsCenter

The ESPN SportsCenter app is good to keep updated on the latest news, scores, analysis, and highlight videos.  One of the more important features of this app is the video highlights, which lets you view the most exciting plays of every game.  It’s all powered by ESPN, so that means you can get your daily dose of Jay Bilas, Andy Katz, and of course Dick Vitale.  Best of all, the SC app has Twitter integration so you can get the latest and most unsubstantiated rumors from a plethora of pseudo sports analysts like Chris Broussard, Stephen A. Smith, and Skip Bayless.  The ESPN TwitterSphere has just confirmed from unreliable sources that the Canadian basketball prodigy Andrew Wiggins will be skipping the NCAA Tournament to join the Harlem Globe Shakers.  Sources have also confirmed that he will be compensated with a $50 gift card to Tim Hortons.

andew wiggins - tim hortons

Andrew Wiggin's expression in response to the $50 Tim Hortons gift card.

With all these apps available at your finger tips, getting consumed by the March Madness experience is now easier than ever!  Please subscribe to the blog below to stay up to date.

The Most Useful Apps for St. Patrick’s Day

st pattys dayMarch 17th is one of the most important dates in Irish history. It is a holiday that honors the death of St. Patrick, the national apostle who introduced Christianity to the country, also known as the fifth-century patron saint. In recognition of such history, it has turned into one of the biggest celebrations of the year. It revolves around revelry of green clothing, Irish lore, food, and libations.  So bust out your green socks and leprechaun hats to celebrate the day’s festivities. We have compiled a list of apps that will help you have a fun and safe St. Patty’s Day.

 findmytap app

FindMyTap

Beer is the universal symbol of St. Patrick’s Day and it is common for bars and restaurants to dye their beer green. For the green beer lovers out there, FindMyTap is a useful app that helps users locate local pubs. Similar to Yelp’s GPS based search engine, this app filters the destinations to beers and bars only. You can browse through your much-loved beverages and even suggest your favorite bars. The app not only provides you directions but it allows you to leave reviews too. For all the beer connoisseurs out there, quench your thirst with this must-have app.

Happy Hours

If you’re hoping to make Happy Hour last an entire day, then this app is for you. It is supported in just about every major city and uses your GPS to find happy hour deals in your area. It lists happy hour deals based on user feedback. Happy Hours are a great opportunity to be social and merry at an affordable price. Rally your friends and coworkers together for a cheap and memorable time. With the Happy Hours app you’ll know exactly where the early evening drinkers are at. With St. Patrick’s Day around the corner, there’s bound to be a plethora of deals.

Beer Roulette – The Drinking Game

Energize your St. Patty’s Day party with a good old-fashioned drinking game. When the beer coma starts to set in, it’s time to break out the Beer Roulette app. Shake up your beer and see who gets to enjoy the beer and who gets sprayed! The beers are digitally “shaken,” mixed, and in turn players must choose one of six cans. The player who gets sprayed is deemed the loser and must chug a beer like a leprechaun.

MyCityWay mycityway app

This all-in-one travel app and local guide is convenient for all your St. Patrick’s Day plans. Find Irish pubs, restaurants, parking spots, parades, and more to help you party all day long. This app delivers personalized contextually-relevant information around-the-clock based on your location; with this app it’s so much easier to find things to do and places to go on this festive holiday. MyCityWay helps you navigate cities better, faster, and smarter.

Taxi Magic, Uber, and Lyft

Going out to a bar for the night? Then you should probably decide against driving and driving. Taxi Magic, a smartphone-based service for booking cabs, allows you to order a taxi and pay online. There’s no extra surcharge — it’s just the flat taxi rate plus a $1 booking fee. One cool feature of this app is if you’re coming from a raging party or standing on the street outside the most crowded pub in town, the Taxi Magic app helps you flag down the cab you called by turning your phone screen into a beacon. Similarly, Uber and Lyft are popular ride sharing apps that allow you to hail a ride based on location. Unlike Taxi Magic, Uber and Lyft drivers are not taxi drivers, but regular people like you and me.

We can always use some help getting into that Irish spirit for the big day. Luckily. there are a lot of apps out there for all our needs.  Have a safe and fun St. Patty’s Day.

Spring Break Travel Tips

Spring break is a great opportunity to see many great attractions of the world. The travel options during this time are limitless. Popular Spring Break destinations each year include Florida, Mexico, the Caribbean, and more – basically any place that is hot and sunny.

When planned properly, Spring Break can be one of the most unforgettable experiences for college students and young adults. To ensure that all Spring Break travelers have the time of their lives safely, here are 4 Spring Break travel tips to get you on your way:

  • Plan Ahead. In order to prepare and make your vacation possible, you need to allow yourself enough time and resources. Ideally, you’d want to begin your preparations at least 5 months in advance. Start thinking about which place you want to visit. Compare the pros and cons with different housing accommodations as well as the travel methods you will be using to get to your destination. Once you’ve decided on a destination, it’s now time to purchase the tickets and reserve your hotel room. Doing this early on will allow you enough time to save for other expenses and get reasonable deals. However if your trip is more sporadic, some businesses offer last minute deals on their packages if demand has been underwhelming.

  • Do the Research. Research is essential if you plan on traveling to a place that you have never visited. It is necessary to familiarize yourself with the location prior to your arrival. Things to research on include currency exchange, culture, entertainment, food, and weather. You also need to determine whether you will need a passport, a photo ID, birth certificate, or all of the above. Additionally, be sure to pack the appropriate clothing and sunscreen for where you’re going.

spring break

  • Budget for Expenses. It’s crucial for traveler’s not to lose sight of how important this is. Having a sufficient budget can either make or break your trip. Budgeting your expenses should be done consistently throughout the planning phase of your Spring Break trip. Determine what you want out of your trip, such as tattoos and souvenirs, and allocate your money accordingly. The more attractions and purchases you plan to visit and make, the more you will need to expand your budget. It is also a good idea to under-budget your trip to accommodate for unforeseen expenses. Here is an online budgeting calculator to help you stay on track.

  • Get Ready. Make sure that you pack all the essential items for your travels. Example: passport, gear, luggage, local currency, and apparel. If you’re flying to your destination, it would be good to know the rules & policies of the airline in regards to flight cancellation, missed connections, lost baggage claims, and more.

Have your trip well planned and prepared in advance. Being an organized traveler will ensure that you have a great time. Get everything together and get ready to enjoy your Spring Break vacation!

5 Ways to Improve Your Phone’s Battery Life & Performance

low-batteryFor a lot of people, smartphones are like a self-extension of oneself as our lives have become increasingly dependent on it.  We utilize our phones in a multitude of ways like browsing the internet, making phone calls, sending emails, texting, and updating Instagram (determining the right filter to use has become an art form). If we take a moment to reflect, we realize that smartphones are essentially a miniaturized PC. Like a PC, your phone should be continually optimized to improve its lifespan. Over a period of time, it can get congested with unnecessary bloatware from installing numerous apps, which in turn can lead to increased susceptibility of crashing, freezing, and battery draining. For avid phone users, the battery never seems to last as long as the manufacturer states. Battery performance has become a big issue with the rise of more demanding smartphones.

Here are 5 ways to improve your phone’s battery life and performance.

Bright Light

phone brightness

Bright screens can sear your retinas.

Your phone’s display is usually the leading cause of poor battery performance. Constant use of your phone will keep the display on and drain your battery. Furthermore, the brightness of your screen has a big impact on battery life as a high brightness increases battery use. You can easily improve battery life adjusting the brightness level down. Although displays are definitely the most stunning at full brightness, you should turn it down a notch to about a quarter of the way from the lowest level to prevent your battery from being drained.

Screen Saving

Another step you should take to optimize your phone is to update its sleeping habits. Lowering the amount of time it takes before the screen goes into standby mode can greatly improve your battery life. On Android devices, you can access the display settings and set your device to sleep after 15 seconds. For iOS devices, there is an auto-lock feature that can be found under the general settings – the shortest timeframe for locking is a minute.

Kill Apps

A smartphone’s ability to multitask across several applications is awesome, but you don’t necessarily need the Facebook or YouTube app wasting memory resources and battery life when running in the background. Many smartphone users do not realize that a lot of apps often run idly in the background, so it is recommended to completely close apps when they are not in use. This will not only improve battery life, but improve the speed of your phone’s performance as it frees up memory allocation.

Location Services

ios_location_services

Location services is useful for the NSA.

Applications that use location services such as Foursquare, iOS Camera, and Google Maps regularly check your location and eat up your battery life. In order to preserve battery juice, simply turn location services off.

Wi-Fi & Bluetooth

Accessing the internet is a major contributor to your phone’s battery usage. Depending on your settings, your phone could systematically be looking for a Wi-Fi signal, even if you’re nowhere near a connection. If you’re not planning to go online, turn off your Wi-Fi connection.  4G internet access can also have detrimental effects on your battery life.  If possible, try reducing your wireless internet connection to 3G or eliminating the internet connection (airplane mode) when not in use. Similar to Wi-Fi and depending on your settings, your phone could be constantly searching for Bluetooth enabled devices within reach, which will deplete your battery. Additionally, having the Bluetooth feature enabled when not in use slowly drains your battery as well.  Turn it off when necessary.

These tips and tricks can help improve your phone battery life and performance.  Conveniently, there are also several apps out for Android and iOS devices dedicated to reducing battery consumption.
