Waterproof Cell Phones: The Next Market Wave

There’s a new gadget getting a lot of attention right now and it’s not the iPhone 5 or the Samsung Galaxy SIII. With the mobile giants gathering a great deal of press time, the What brings this new contender to the spotlight? The Kyocera Hydro has a unique feature that neither the SIII nor the iPhone 5 can boast: It’s waterproof.

How many times has your phone ended up at the bottom of a sink filled with wet dishes, in a puddle, or even at the bottom of your toilet bowl? Sometimes we have to face that living on a planet that’s 70% water might not give our gadgets the best odds of survival. The Kyocera Hydro is working to lighten the impact of such incidents, as the new phone is waterproof for up to 30 minutes in up to three feet of water, making it an ideal choice for the accident prone, beach bound, or rainy-day loving smart phone user.

In addition to it’s waterproofing, the Kyocera Hydro holds its own against the competition with its other smartphone features:

  • Android 4.0 (Icecream Sandwich)
  • 3.2 MP Camera with Flash & Video
  • WiFi and GPS Enabled
  • 3.5″ Touchscreen Display
  • 4.16 Ounces
  • 3G capabilities

The Hydro is available through Boost Mobile. If you prefer to shop around for different options, waterproof phones are slowly appearing on the market. In addition to the Kyocera Hydro, look for Casio’s GzOne Commando (available through Verizon) or for the anticipated Sony Xperia V. Also be on the lookout for new film technologies that could add a protective coating to your existing smartphone, making them more water resistant.

If your phone isn’t quite up to speed with waterproof technologies, your warranty may not cover damage incurred from liquid or moisture; Protect Your Bubble’s Gadget Insurance can give you the protection you need against liquid damage. Even if your phone is waterproof, our insurance also covers you for other forms of accidents, loss, or theft.

How many times have you lost a phone to water damage, and how’d you do it? Share your phone’s tale of watery demise in a comment or on our Facebook page.

Infographic: iPhone 5 Owners

It’s been said that there are differences between New Yorkers and Californians. Recently, Protect Your Bubble put that concept to the test. We’ve created an infographic showcasing the differences between the two cities. On Sept. 21, 2012, release day of the iPhone 5, we surveyed consumers waiting in line at Apple stores in New York City and San Francisco.  The findings are below:

iPhone 5: East Coast vs.West Coast

ProtectYourBubble.com commissioned a survey in New York City and San Francisco this morning of over 200 Apple fans in line for the new iPhone 5.  The first-ever study of iPhone 5 purchasers reveals more Apple fans in San Francisco would prefer to have lunch with Albert Einstein over Steve Jobs, JFK and Lady Gaga; whereas NYC residents chose Steve Jobs over Einstein. Other differences between the two cities indicate:

  • More than 60 percent of San Francisco iPhone fans standing in line would rather misplace their iPhones than their wallets. In New York City,  the majority of Apple fans would rather lose their wallets than their iPhones.

  • The majority of San Francisco Apple fans in line picture Siri as Cameron Diaz, while the majority of New York City Apple fans in line envision Angelina Jolie.

  • Similarities found between the two cities include: 70 percent of those waiting in line were male, in their middle 20s, have purchased 3 or more iPhones in the past and were most looking forward to the phone’s longer lasting battery.

  • 43.4 percent of the people polled did not know that replacing their iPhone 5 without a contract can cost as much as $749 versus the subsidized rate of $299 for the iPhone 5 32 GB, underscoring the importance of researching and purchasing gadget insurance.

Tricks for iPhone Users Who Aren’t Planning to Upgrade to an iPhone 5 Right Away

While the world awaits the new iPhone 5, iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S users can still perform some cool tricks using their current cell phones. We’ve compiled a list of five practical tips to help you make the most of your device, with or without the upgrade:

1. Perform a Hard Reset – This trick can be performed when users are having issues with the performance of their iPhone. A hard reset shuts the iPhone off completely. To do this, hold lock and home buttons down at the same time about five 5 seconds. The Apple logo will appear and then the phone will power down. Let the phone rest for a moment and then turn it back on and then it should be refreshed and ready to go.

2. Caps Lock – For those who want to convey a strongly worded message or simply enjoy texting in all caps, there’s a way to easily do that. Simply double tap the shift key and TYPE THE MESSAGE.

3. Custom Vibrations – Many people don’t realize that it’s possible to customize the vibrate mode on iOS 5. This is done by going to “Settings,” then to “General” and then to “Accessibility.” Next, turn on “Custom Vibrations” under “Hearing.” Then, go to “Settings” and then to “Sounds.” Scroll to the bottom, and that’s where “Vibration Patterns” are located. Once this button is tapped, users should tap on “Create New Vibration;” this is where users can make their own custom vibration. To create a unique pattern, tap the screen to create a pulse by tapping one’s finger for quick pulses and/or holding one’s finger down for longer vibrations. Users can also assign these vibrations to a contact, or use them as the default vibration.

4. Get Hourly Weather Reports – This is a useful and easy iPhone trick. Simply access the weather app to view the weekly weather report. Tap on the day of the week and a drop down screen will reveal the hourly forecast for the rest of the day. Note: It doesn’t work days in advance.

5. Take a Screenshot – Many folks don’t realize they can take screen shots. All that needs to be done is to press the home button and the lock button simultaneously. The screen will flash white to verify that the action was performed. For those with Photo Stream via iCloud, each image goes straight into the user’s stream.

The best tip a consumer can use is to insure their iPhone. Protect Your Bubble offers iPhone insurance which covers loss, theft and water damage. Consumers will receive a replacement device in 24 hours. Visit ProtectYourBubble.com to get a quick quote.

Protect your daily life with insurance for your iphone 5

Take a moment and imagine the following scenario:

You’re driving or walking around your city. You don’t know the phone numbers of any of your loved ones. You don’t have any maps to help guide you. You can’t remember where and when you were supposed to meet your friends, so you’re probably late…and lost. As you try to find your way, your important emails are going unanswered, friends and family can’t get in touch with you, and everyone is wondering where you are…

iPhone with shattered glass

It's not just a broken phone: It's a broken GPS, camera, datebook, and more.

While this may seem a bit extreme, it’s the exact scenario many smartphone users would find themselves in if something were to happen to their phone. iPhone users who have lost their phones to an accident or theft know that sinking feeling in the pit of their stomach that comes with the death of a smartphone. All of a sudden, you’ve lost the gadget that offered so many capabilities that you used on a daily basis, and you know that you’ll have to pay to replace it. Replacing a lost smartphone can be more expensive than the general public would think:

“what if you lost your wallet with $900 in cash in it, plus your address book and your bank passwords? That’s what it’s like when you lose your smartphone…If you lose your top-of-the-line iPhone…and you aren’t eligible for an upgrade anytime soon, you could pay as much as $849 for the [replacement] device alone.” -Jeanett Pavini, Market Watch

As phones become more sophisticated and capable, we depend on them more and more. The iPhone 5 is expected to continue the legacy of usability from previous iPhone generations with added features that will blend all of your technical needs into one device for your day-to-day. Protect your investment, your information, and your life by insuring your phone.

With Protect Your Bubble’s Mobile Gadget Insurance, you can carry your iPhone 5 through life without worrying about the “what if’s”. If your four-year-old takes it for a swim in the toilet, you’re covered. If you wake up after a night out with a headache, but without your phone, you’re covered. If your screen is cracked after your phone escaped your pocket, you’re covered. With the most comprehensive coverage on the market at only $7.99 per month, you’ll have peace of mind knowing that if your phone should meet an untimely end you’ll be able to replace it quickly and efficiently. You also have the freedom to cancel anytime, keeping you free of pesky contracts and complications.

Anticipating the iPhone 5: Are the rumors true?

Two days may seem like a short span of time for most, but for the tech world, it’s an eternity as everyone awaits Apple’s big announcement on September 12. The iPhone 5 and its rumored improvements are expected to be the stars of the day, garnering even more love from avid Apple devotees as well as the general public. Here’s a round-up of the suspected new features:

Looks

 Larger display
While iPhone users rave about the clarity and crispness of their screens, the smartphone is a bit smaller than a few of its competitors. The iPhone 5 is expected to be taller, offering more surface area for displays.

 Moving components
A few whispers about the new iPhone design discuss a headphone jack at the phone’s base instead of its current placement on the top. This movement also leads to another rumor of a smaller connection port. The iconic 30 pin charge and connector port for the iPhone may become a thing of the past in order to allow space on the base of the phone for the new headphone jack; possible replacements have been guessed as everything from an 8 pin design to a 19 pin design.

 Metallic and toned
iPhone 5 may be upgrading its looks with a sleek, two-toned metal back.

 Functionality

 iOS 6
Many Apple product users are already salivating over the new features of iOS 6, from turn-by-turn navigation to an improved Siri, capable of answering more questions and understanding more commands, including the ability to tell you the scores of the game you may be missing while you’re out. These, along with flyover 3D views of your city, Passbook, and Facebook integration make iOS 6 one of the most expected software launches from Apple to date. TechRadar has a great summary of all of the features if you’re ready to take a closer look at the new system.

 Smaller SIM
While some carriers would not be affected, the iPhone 5 is expected to feature new nanoSIM styles instead of the previous microSIM technology, taking the petite card to an even smaller size.

 LTE
The new iPhone is not only expected have 4G, but also rumored to have LTE capabilities, taking speed and service to an entirely new level as you browse through your new features and apps.

 Additional Rumors

If new features, looks, and capabilities weren’t enough, the new iPhone is expected to have a few new accessories released with it. According to MacRumors, redesigned earbuds may be coming with the new phone, giving you a more comfortable listening experience from your new device.
